Veneers Q & A

What are veneers?

Veneers are ultra-thin coverings that Dr. Urban bonds over your natural teeth to improve the appearance of your smile. They are perfect for covering smile flaws, such as:

  • Cracked teeth
  • Chipped teeth
  • Gaps
  • Discoloration
  • Crooked teeth

Dr. Urban offers several different brands of veneers, including Lumineers® and E.MAX®. Both are excellent brands. Lumineers are made of sturdy porcelain and are thin enough (approximately 0.2 mm) that your teeth don’t need to be filed down at all, maintaining the structure of your natural teeth.

E.MAX restorations are made of lithium disilicate ceramic, a top grade material noted for its durability and opaque qualities. They’re also highly translucent, allowing them to closely match the natural appearance of tooth enamel.

With either, you can continue eating all the foods you love without any worry of damaging your veneers. They look, feel, and function just like your natural teeth.

How are veneers made and placed?

After an initial consultation, Dr. Urban takes detailed impressions of your teeth and sends the mold to an outside dental lab. There, your veneers are custom-made to fit snugly over your teeth according to records and specifications sent by Dr. Urban.

When you return a few short weeks later, Dr. Urban installs your veneers. First, he has you try them on to make sure it’s a good fit. Then he uses a strong, special dental adhesive to bond the restoration over your teeth.

After you get your veneers, Dr. Urban schedules a follow-up visit within a few weeks to check on you and monitor your progress. If you experience any complications or notice chips or cracks in your veneers, let the office know right away. The entire process usually takes about three or four visits.

How long do veneers last?

According to clinical studies, veneers are built to last for the long haul — at least 20 years in most cases. Still, it’s important to treat your veneers like natural teeth and eat a healthy, balanced diet and continue to brush and floss regularly. Also, don’t forget to maintain regular visits with Dr. Urban for cleanings and checkups.
